First of all, thank you @Beth and @rijkvanzanten for creating this “General” category and always listening to the community’s suggestions!
I’ve been using Directus daily for nearly two years now, so at this point I feel much less like a “user” and more like a “lover” of Directus.
Over time, I’ve collected a few suggestions, so I wanted to share them here, my suggestions/thoughts are shared with appreciation and a desire to contribute back to help improve the platform that has brought me many benefits, and to help spark new discussions for continuous improvement.
Directus TV & Videos
- Add a “Recent Videos” tab/section to Directus TV. Whenever I visit
directus.io/tv, I struggle to remember what I’ve already watched. Youtube and similar platforms solve this with “watched” status or other indicators, but I realize that may be tricky without logins. Even just a “Recent” section would help track new content! (along with announcing in the deprecated #content-feed channel on discord) - Ability to search in the Directus TV, since every episode has a transcript which is great, I think it’s a great opportunity to add search functionality for easier navigation between series and episodes. Additionally, I recommend if every episode includes a clear list of “features” or key takeaways highlighted—especially from the 100 apps in 100 hours series. By features, I mean specific actionable tips or tasks from episodes, like “Create a blocking flow to validate (…)” or “Create authentication system in Nuxt.” This list would help viewers quickly decide which videos are most relevant to their needs and learning goals. Moreover, having these featured lists would improve SEO by making it easier for people to find videos when searching for solutions to specific issues. I’d say this approach is similar to YouTube chapters, making content more accessible and useful.
- Please keep sharing feature announcements via Youtube, as you did with collaborative editing (shoutout to Bryant & Florian’s). I feel the Youtube channel isn’t as active (last video was 3 months ago) as the project’s amazing progress deserves. For example, features like RTL support and similar features could make great showcase videos too!
- In the previous changelog, Bryant announced a great new tutorial series called Community Hopline. It would be awesome to see these episodes featured on directus.tv as well! On a similar note, Bryant has also created some really helpful videos, answering Directus+ questions with the same spirit. Just a thought—maybe these could be included on this series too, if you think they fit? it’s up to your good judgment.
- Plus, the last changelog episode wasn’t added to Directus TV, would be great if these could be kept up-to-date.
Docs, Extensions, and Learning
-
Add a “Last Edit” label to each page in the docs, since the code base evolves so quickly, this would help users spot out-of-date info at a glance.
-
For a long time I was a flows guy
Because the extensions in general was hard for me to figure out. I struggled building my first one, and often had to look at open-source examples just to see what’s possible (for instance, I only recently stumbled on components.directus.io and I’m not exactly sure how I found the link). I think the extension area would really benefit from more descriptive info for each type and some “zero-to-hero” tutorials or video episodes. Sometimes when exploring others’ extensions, I discover features that aren’t documented anywhere (FYR). I’m probably not the best learner, but if extension docs are improved (maybe by whoever tackles these tutorials), it’ll help us all. -
directus.io/extensions displays marketplace extensions, but I noticed a difference in how search works compared to the in-app marketplace. The website seems to search for packages with the
directus-extensionsprefix, while the Directus app matches against any package starting withdirectus-, likedirectus-hook-validate-two-dates. This made it harder to locate some extensions unless their naming follows a specific pattern.I remember it was once recommended to start extension names with
directus-extensionfor better visibility, but I can’t find this advice in the extension quickstart anymore. Could we clarify and synchronize the naming/search patterns between the website and app marketplace?
Announcements & Events
- Would love more active notifications for Directus events and announcements—especially for things like community office hours (I miss the “request review” Thursdays, and while you’ve done a few recently, they weren’t announced enough on Discord!). Tagging everyone for a monthly/quarterly event wouldn’t feel like spam; it actually helps us get more engaged!
Thanks again for listening and making this such a supportive environment. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts and continuing to help improving this incredible community together!
